Echocardiographic Study in Normal Infants and Children

Echocardiography is noninvasive and without known risk, its application in the diagnosis and management of congenital heart disease in infants and children has become indispensable. There are numerous echocardiographic studies for normal and abnormal heart of adults, but very few in Korean infants and children.
Echocardiographic study was performed on 96 normal infants and children age of 3 months to 15 years to obtaine the normal values of heart dimension, thickness of inter-ventricular septum, to assess the movement of anterior mitral leaflet and left ventricular f unction.
The results obtained are as follows:
RVD: 1.430.17 (Range 1.02.0)cm.
LVEDd: 3.190.52 (2.05.5)cm.
LVESd: 2.040.31 (1.083.63)cm.
LAD: 1.980.42 (1.04.38)cm.
Ao: 2.040.28 (1.133.0)cm.
IVS: 5.911.52 (3.012.5)mm.
LA/AO ratio: 1.060.21 (0.68^2.57)
S.V.: 36.1113.16 (11.1122.9) ml.
E.F.: 72.189.44 (49.7192.5) o
EF: Slope: 91.8818.3 (50.0155.0) mm/sec.
The normal values of heart dimension, movement of anterior mitral leaflet and left ventricular function were increased by aging but no difference was found in LA/AO ratio.
